Today is a very special day for Stannah Canada - we are celebrating our first birthday!
Stannah has been giving people their independence back for over 150 years now, and although our stairlifts have been available in Canada for decades through our network of distributers, it was only last year that we opened our first direct business in the country. We’re pleased to say it’s been a very successful year and we’re excited for the challenges year 2 will bring!

From our early days, when Joseph Stannah first started the company in the London dockyards, it’s been an uphill battle through decades of economic turmoil; but the Stannah family worked hard to build the business up, and now we’re thriving in more than 40 countries worldwide. Stannah has received a lot of recognition along the way. Our most recent success was our two chairmen, Brian and Alan Stannah, receiving MBEs (Members of the Orders of the British Empire) for their services to British manufacturing. This was in recognition of Stannah’s signature product – our stairlifts, which have been giving people worldwide their independence back for over 40 years now.
Stannah has remained a committed family business, and today, the company is managed by the 5th generation of Stannahs.
Opening our first Canadian office
One whole year ago, on the 4th of April 2017, we opened our first Canadian office, and what a journey it has been! Nick Stannah, managing director for worldwide operations, came over from the UK to celebrate the occasion and spoke at our grand opening. During the ceremony, he said:
“Following Stannah’s recognition by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists last year, it was only natural that our next step would be to open our first office in Canada. So, we are really proud to be opening our office in Markham in 2017, and so excited about the opportunity to directly serve our customers in the GTA for years to come.”

As Nick Stannah noted, our stairlifts are recognised by the CAOT – the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists. This is part of a product recognition program that the CAOT developed as a way of reviewing products that their clientele could find useful. Made up of 16,000 professionals across the whole of Canada, this organization has the aim of improving the health and well-being of Canadians by helping them live their everyday lives to the fullest.
The product recognition program was built to help their clients as well as members of their organization to find the best product to suit their clients’ needs. Certified occupational therapists review a product and write up a report, following rigorous guidelines, at which point they can award the product or company with a seal of recognition, if their guidelines are met.
We were extremely proud to receive this seal of recognition, as it acknowledges the care that goes into the design, manufacturing and installation of every stairlift we make. As the exclusive stairlift holder of the CAOT seal of recognition, the CAOT also recognises that not all stairlifts are the same, and rewards the superior quality of the stairlifts we make.
And this last year, we’ve been busy!
The Stannah Canada team has been out and about, meeting people and showing them the difference a Stannah stairlift could make to their lives. We’ve spoken at chapter meetings for different organizations, conferences and shows, and have given thousands of people the answer to their reduced mobility that they’ve been looking for.

Stannah Canada is proud to be a trusted partner of CARP (Canadian Association for Retired Persons) – Canada’s leading advocacy association for older Canadians. CARP is an important advocate for the rights of seniors, and we are proud to be associated with them, helping them in their cause. Stannah Canada has been present at several of their chapter meetings, and has spoken about everything from the myths and the realities of stairlift ownership to the apps we’ve been busy developing to help seniors maintain their balance as they age.

Stannah Canada was a title sponsor for the March of Dimes “Opening Doors for Accessibility” event in Toronto in October. We are very pleased to be strongly associated with this first-class organization, a community-based rehabilitation and advocacy charity for people with physical disabilities.
Stannah’s goals, of helping people with reduced mobility live their every day lives more comfortably and easily, line up perfectly with the aims of this excellent organization. We strive to build relationships with organizations that are really making a difference in people’s lives, so that we can support each other and work together to reach as many people as we can, and make their lives that little bit easier.
Stannah and Zoomer
Stannah was at the Zoomer show in October 2017, and even took along a few stairlifts for people to try out. It was a great opportunity to be able to speak to people, and show them exactly how a stairlift could make their lives better. We were also proud to be featured in the Zoomer 150 edition, where Zoomer recognised our commitment to quality and our ability to adapt our lifts to practically any staircase.
We like to get out and about, but our priority is fitting the right stairlift for you
Our priority is you. Your accessibility needs come above everything else we do, and we do whatever we can to make sure you’re safe and comfortable in your home. We’ve installed many stairlifts in the past year, and each one has been specially manufactured for the person whose independence it will restore.
Although all our stairlifts are made to meet your needs, there are some projects that go that extra mile to fit your specific tastes. One of those projects is the All Black – a truly unique stairlift! It truly is a beautiful example of how we can work with our customers to create wonderful pieces of accessibility equipment, that actually add something to the space, rather than detract from it.
It’s been a challenging year, but a great one. We’ve helped make the lives of so many Canadians just a little bit easier, and that’s what keeps us going. To all of our customers, partners and employees, thank you so much for making our first year unforgettable. As we celebrate the end of an incredibly successful first year, we look forward to serving Canada for many years to come!
